hey everyone. This really doesn't pertain to self defense on the street but more to sticking up for yourself. The problem is i really can't fight that well and I'm surrounded by people who grew up fighting all the time.
I'm in college now and am forced to deal people who always want to test somebody. Don't get me wrong...people don't pick on me mostly because I'm somewhat of a funny guy and am generally cool with everyone I know. But everyone I know loves to fight/playfight...box...slapbox...just basically fight.
I can tell some people are thinking, "oh...he just wants to learn to fight so he can particapate in that foolishness." No that's not the case...let me give you an example of what I mean.
This one day me and some of my friends were outside. I left them 2 go inside to grab something inside and this one boy who I didn't know at the time came up 2 me and just punched me. This WAS serious. I saw him when he came out but thought nothing of it...I wasn't "Aware" of what was going on which was a mistake on my behalf. Anyway I was able 2 recover rather quickly and was able to get a swing off but was only able to barely catch him in the face cause he ducked and shoved me into the wall screaming, "so you like fuckin my cousin over?" He actually mistook me 4 someone else but it really didn't matter at the time. He caught me in the stomach and again in the face. I didn't know what to do. so I did some kind of kick which knocked him back a little but it didn't give me enough time to do anything else and he went back to swinging at me. All this happened in a matter of about 10 seconds and by this time my friends were able come help me and started beating him up. Many of you could have easily handled yourselves in this situation cause you already know how to fight being martial artists and well...you know what I mean.
Despite all the punches to the face, he only did minor damage which completely healed up in about 4 days. He actually got it a lot worse than i did. But all that made me think..."what if my friends weren't there? What if he caught me while i was going upstairs?" This guy was really angry so i know i would have gotten it real bad if it went down like that.
The real thing is, I'm only a freshman in college so i can't afford to take any self-defense classes and don't have the time to do so because of my studies. My friends tried to help me learn to fight but.....well. They say I'm a little slow with my punches and reflexes which confuses me because I'm somewhat fast. Back in high school i ran a 4.4 in the 40. But
I guess running doesn't help punches. I really need help cause the school has a lot of fights and I generally stay as far away as I can from them. What can I do to help myself? Also what exercises should I do to improve my reflexes and punches cause my friends dont know? |

Where dp ypu live? I could teach you some basic moves if you live in Edmonton. Also you can always buy some videos or books on how to defend yourself. _________________ "I am completly out of ammo....That's never happened to me before." |

Given your situation, we cannot recommend any specific training options. e.g. "Oh, I have a buddy in NC, go to 35 Front St. and ask for Guido". Like ash, I kind of wish I could just spend a couple hours with you teaching you how to shield, hit, elbow and knee, but no use dreamin'.
While things are hot you'll simply want to take precautions. Stick close to friends, stay away from where alcohol is served. Stick to where there are a lot of people (ie. witnesses) generally, and things can't get out of control and someone can break it up or call in an ambulance. You sound like a good guy. Be nice--really nice--until it's time not to be nice. When you believe it's going to go physical, don't cuss, don't push. Hit first, hit fast and hard with a good lean of the body, and don't stop hitting until they fall down. Punch and knee while moving your body forward into the target for greater force.
I recommend a high guard, since in real life most brawlers are headhunters, and it's easier to consistently drop your elbows into the guy's hit than to move them both up and down. Keep your forearms close to your head as you shield, like a "crazy monkey", have a bit of a forward lean, putting your body shots a bit more out of reach. Block both face shots and hook shots to the head by moving the one hand like the Fonz stroking his hair, so that your elbow goes in front of your face while your hand and your hand goes behind your ear. Then quickly return to the crazy monkey. With body shots, drop the point of your elbow into the punch. Punch from the crazy monkey position, and return to the crazy monkey position.
A lot of times when people have trouble with their defence, it's because their hands are too far away from their own body. Remember that speed can be kept constant, but if you halve the distance you have to move, you halve the response time as well.
If you did have the money or time to train by video, it'd be better spent on live training: boxing, maybe kickboxing.
A bit on awareness. The site in general has good info:

Wish you the best in your studies. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com

| Thanks for the tips Ms....um....i really don't know what to call you. Ms. Job...yeah, that will work. These tips will definetely be helpful if God forbid I end up getting into another altercation. I would like to thank you and ash for taking the time to respond to my post. I pray that you both and everyone will be safe and will never have to use your skills in a real life threatening situation. Thanks again |

| Oh...i should also add that me and the other boy are cool now. This happened earlier this semester and he actually mistook me for someone else. So everything is good between us now. I realized earlier in life that the more friends you have, the better your chances of being protected if something goes down. I'll also try to find that guy you were talking about Ms. Job. What part of NC does your friend live? Is it in Charlotte? |

mumblez, I was saying that rhetorically, I don't know any guy named Guido in NC. I was just making the point that we can't provide a direct solution to your problem--only advice. Sorry if that was unclear.
Again, I'm a DUDE. The individual depicted in the avatar is Maria Sharapova, refining her fellatio technique on a banana.
It's just nice to look at, you know?[/b] _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com

| Yes I certainly know how you feel. I had the same things happen before. I got some books and videos about basic attack and defense skills. Those helped boost my confidence. There are many good resources on line. |
