A lot of strategic skills can be taught effectively through books. We can learn concepts for fear management, deterrence, avoidance, target denial, etc. and the nice thing is, you can tell me the name of a book and if I buy it, I'll get the exact same content, even though I live on the other side of the world.

Now I know the google ads are not directly affiliated with SDZ, but there was one link to a site, "OpSecIntel" that advertised a book--apparently self-published--which looks to me like total crap. For instance, it contains the statement:

"A criminals target acquisition, although sometimes based on spontaneity induced through desperation, is often a complex one that needs to be addressed. Criminals are not always the intellectually disabled losers that societal misconceptions have cultivated, nor should they be written off as suffering from a cerebral short form."

(A "cerebral short form"? Societal misconceptions that cultivate intellectually disabled losers? Wow, I have a Masters degree in psychology and I've never heard of these things! Must be super-advanced stuff!)

Advice to Stephan Kurr: Learn to speak English, buddy. If this guy was really in military intelligence and referred to as "one of the best", I wanna stay the heck away from the service branch he was involved in.

Obviously the classic for North Americans is Gavin DeBecker's Gift of Fear. I also enjoyed his book, Protecting the Gift but didn't touch his terrorism stuff because admittedly, I am just not interested in that stuff.

My personal favourite is Strong On Defense by Sanford Strong, and I recomend it to everyone.

I also liked Defensive Living by Bo Hardy.

What are the "must reads" of self-defence in your view?

Fifty views and not one response? That's pretty freakin' sad.

This place is dead, man.

Black Belt does have some good stuff. It's where I discovered Jim Wagner. I know you're big into KB, but to me, the value of books is more to understand the abstract, big-picture stuff, like what DeBecker and Strong have done. Check it out, it'll embiggen the mind. Very Happy

I own and collect just about any type of martial arts books. I have some very old books. I started collecting and reading them because of my interest in Bruce Lee back in the 70's. I used to read the old comic/graphic novel series, "Deadly Hands of Kung Fu", when I was a kid and that got me started. I find that I own more books on martial arts than most chain book stores carry on their shelves. I have been involved in martial arts in one way or another, one style or another, since I was 12, I'm 44 now. I guess it is my first and most steady hobby, my second is with practical "user" knives.

I stopped collecting martial arts books when I started realizing how useless they were to me, since most of the stuff taught in MA, generally speaking, is crap. I have a couple shelves full which I probably would never sell, and stacks of old magazines. But I would never train from or do any of the stuff in them. There's only a couple on Brazilian Jujitsu or MMA that I ever use. The rest have only sentimental or academic value.

Recently got a blackbelt edition book titled "Combatives for Street Survival:Hardcore Countermeasures for Street Situations". Very simple techniques, no nonsense. Cuts to the core. He says combatives are what you do to someone, not with someone. That is the difference between combatives and martial arts.

I've been collecting self defense and martial arts books for the past 20 years. I do agree with you that a lot can be learned from a book. However, in my experience most books are lacking either realistic techniques, training methods, and/or strategies, or they only cover a limited part of self defense. Unfortunately beginners and some advanced students don't realize this until it's too late.

I've published my own self defense ebook, and although I may be biased, I do think it's a must read for anyone interested in self defense. If you're interested, here's a link:

I agree. Books are nothing more than a supplement to augment to what I already learned from formal training.

Just went to the link. That's the most shitty, obnoxious ad copy I've ever read.
