I think Guns are for weaklings, basically. I wouldn't defend myself with something so easy. I prefer a real weapon; a sword. I can't find anything in California State Law prohibiting me from carrying my sword around with me as a general practice, as long as it's not concealed.

Does anyone know anything about the legality of swords?

Ask a cop.

So self-defence, after all, comprises defense of the machismo eh?

What are you, 16 years old or something?

Walking around outside in a city with a sword will just cause trouble. You would have to have it sealed or in a carrying case. But I'm sure you could be allowed to use it for self defense in your own home.

I spent a lot of time looking for an answer to this myself, but I finally found something. Although there is nothing in the California code of laws directly prohibiting the carrying of a sword, there is a provision which states that nothing may be carried that has no purpose other than hurting people. Hunting knives are allowed and such, because they can be used. Guns, as I'm sure you are aware, require a permit for carry.

Some states the law is that you can a blade up to a certain length. If you really wanted a sword that bad though I suppose you could have one that when sheathed looks like a cane.

How can you be so pathetic?!? Guns are too easy- rubbish. Ever tried to hit a moving target with the added stress of being attacked, and other environmental factors? BEsides, always take the easy way out. I'd rather be the guy who shoots his assailant in the kneecaps and walks away unscathed than the bed-bound guy who disembowelled his opponent with a samurai sword. Self-defence isn't about machismo- its about keeping yourself safe and unharmed. Using a sword increases the chance of painful injuries..... and besides, who the f**k carries a sword in the city? Apart from being totall illegal of course....

hehe, when I was sixteen (note the age) I carried a sword too - I carried it in a long roll of paper that stuck up out of my backpack. It had a very small tang, and was a short ninja sword, so I could do this. It was totally illegal, of course, and I wouldn't recommend it. As a matter of fact, I haven't done anything like that since I was 16. However, I actually understand what Ken is talking about. In a way, the invention of firearms has taken something away from the purity of the the warrior. Now anyone with a gun is a warrior, or thinks he is. In another time, a warrior was one who had been through the fire of his training just as his blade had been through the forge, and emerged with purity. Guns are pathetic, for the weak, yes. On the other hand, one must be practical - these ARE the times, accept them. If your enemy has a gun, train to defeat the gun or outgun him.

Oh, and if you walk around with an unconcealed sword, even if it's legal, you're asking for every street punk and would-be tough guy to try to take you out. Speaking as a warrior I'd say it would be an admirable way to die - in battle, slaying your enemies Smile

When they use a knife, yes, not when they use a gun - then they're not warriors IN THE SENSE A MEDIEVAL WARRIOR was called a warrior, no. let me illustrate what the difference is - many people could blow a man's head off with a gun, few could spill his blood and guts on the floor with a sword. I don't mean to be insulting to soldiers, indeed, my family have been warriors for hundreds of years, but with a gun, the spirit, the nerve is missing. It is one thing to face hot lead and another to face cold steel - indeed, for quite a few modern soldiers the cold steel of a bayonet is worse than the threat of a bullet.
To kill (or die) by cold steel is not the same as killing or dying by an arrow or a bullet. And to take a bright fierce joy in clashing with cold steel is something beyond that, the warrior spirit that breathes down the centuries and blows off the dust of fear to reveal the man beneath..

Let me illustrate further - many englishmen in the last century used to hunt the tiger in the jungle with a gun and talk of their bravery and courage. But once I read a true story of a man who used to hunt jaguars in south america with only a spear, blade against fang. Now THIS man was a warrior.
There was an american in texas whose arm was hopelessly pinned by a rockfall in the desert. This man had two alternatives - lie there and die, or cut off his own arm with his own hands. This man tourniqueted his arm, and then cut it off with a hunting knife. Then he walked miles through the desert to safety. This man was a warrior.

There are men and there are men - among modern soldiers you will find men of exemplary courage and determination and selflessness and will who TRULY DO merit the term warrior. But it is a mark of distinction, and has been so for centuries. Every man who carries a gun in the service of whatever his country may be is not necessarily deserving of the term.

To be a warrior is more than just to know how to kill - it is far, far more subtle than that.

Arath is employing an arbitrary, "poetic" definition of the word "warrior", by which he flatters some persons and snubs others.

It's not a matter of what the word warrior "means to me" or who you feel "merits the title" of warrior. The word "warrior" has a specific meaning. It is simply used to refer to those persons whom a society has authorized to use deadly force in its protection. Nowadays these are usually in two categories: military personnel, and law enforcement personnel.

This has nothing to do with courage or strength of character, or whatever else. There are plenty of scumbags in every branch of the military and in police services around the world. But they're warriors--whereas I am not. (They're just really lousy warriors.)

In fact, a lot of really good folks who have keen interest and passion in the defence of their society avoid or leave these occupations because the working environment is so corrupt that they cannot serve the best interests of society within that context. The few good ones who persist and prevail at great cost, are individuals I truly respect.

Self-defence is a simple and practical matter. Let's not go off and be silly now, romanticizing words to mean whatever we like.

Blowjoblessons..

As I said, my family have been warriors for hundreds of years, both in east and west (I'm of mixed stock) - when knights in the west fought each other in armor, we were there - when the samurai rode out to battle, we rode with them - when ships sailed from the west to conquer a planet, we were on those ships. But that's history.

I personally studied ninjutsu in one of the few remaining schools of the east. Ninjutsu is an assassins art - most people in the west (including those who dress up in black suits) cannot begin to comprehend what that means. As a child I underwent rituals to remove mercy from my mentality - I would have to place a living beast on the ground, slit open its chest with a blade, and remove it beating heart with my hands. This had no religious significance, it was just to make killing a 'normal task' for the student. As children we were made to dig up old graves and handle the bones to bring home to us that death was a very ordinary thing. We were being raised to be killers, you see.

After I became an adult I saw active service in several theatres of war, both as a mercenary and as a soldier - I have fought in both jungles and in the desert, and have once, in an eastern city, served in a police force.

My point - I am not the kind to 'wax poetic' - I am lethal, I've been in half a hundred combats, and death has no significance to me one way or another. I have seen so much death that I don't particularly mind dying - death is a favored friend. I can remember a time when I was young when I actually used to feel afraid in combat - that time is so far away now. My age? 30.

Anyway, if I've said anything in the posts above, I've tried to put into words the warrior ethic by which I live - a warrior ethic that I've developed DESPITE my training in the Ryu. The Ryu tried to kill compassion in me, but I defied them and said, I REFUSE to turn my heart to stone. THAT makes me a warrior, that I, who had been taught ruthlessness should choose to learn compassion. As I said, being a warrior is a subtle thing. As you see here, being a soldier, a killer, is not what made me a warrior, but learning kindness and compassion despite EVERYTHING is what did. You see, there's nothing arbitary about what makes a man a warrior - indeed, the concept might have a different meaning for each human being.

Sure, this is a self defense forum, and I understand what you're getting at, and I'm quite willing to be practical in threads that need practical input - but here, the guy who started this thread was trying to say something not easily understood. I just wanted him to know that he WAS understood, is all.

Take care, and stay safe.
