Hi there

I was wondering if anyone could advise me on what items I could keep on myself so ward off an attacker...I don't want to carry actual weapons as they are illegal here...was thinking more along the lines of keys, hair spray to use as mace etc Thanks

in fact, there're lots of "peaceful" items that can be used as improvised weapons. if you're woman (cause you posted your topic in a women's SD section), most probably you usually carry small scissors or a nailfile (or both of them) - these are good tools for self defense, and it's important that it's organic for you to carry and use these items. But why don't you like to buy pepper (mace) spray?

I guess I'll address the question more generally, since guest isn't responding.

There is an old American saying that the best knife in a fight... is th one in your hand. Likewise, the most important factor in selecting an improvised weapon is that you can lay your hands on it immediately when suddenly and violently assaulted. So people can come up with all kinds of ideas like a rat-tail comb, dog spray, bear spray, "hare spray", etc. but they're in your handbag or backpack... no good.

I favour something solid and reliable that can be clipped to your clothing or pocket and can be quickly and effectively deployed. For instance:

- a pen. Anything you jab with a pen hurts.
- a flashlight. I'm talking about a small, strong, durable LED flashlight. This has broader safety utility than just a "self-defence weapon". It's just a good thing to have on you. It can be used also as a yawara or fistload.
- if legal in your area, a tactical folder such as a Spyderco Delica or Cold Steel Voyager. Training in knife tactics is very important if you're going to carry. If people are interested I can post a bit on this kind of training.

Actually, in every case, you should train with the item, both in terms of attack/defence lines, and deployment/retention drills.

Both Kelly McCann (aka Jim Grover) and Jim Wagner provide good training in many of the force options, and there are others. I think Alliance Martial Arts does some stuff with improvised weapons as well.

Or google "unbreakable umbrella". If you live in a rainy area, this may be just the thing to have with you. I've never dealt with it myself, and I don't even train in cane stuff. But some big names, including the Dog Brothers, have come forward in support of the product. Before this was introduced, I knew of one fellow, a Brit I think, who would for a fee replace the fabric of your umbrella with kevlar, providing a slash-resistant shield. I suppose he must have sprayed it with some sort of waterproofing material. My experience with kevlar is that it is a hefty, bulky material. However, one person I know seemed to be pretty happy with the result.

I live in a very dry area, and would never carry something like that.

I'm also in a white-collar occupation, so I would never carry paratools and stuff on a utility belt. My street arsenal consists of ergonomic shoes, mini-LED keychains and a flat zytel tac-folder, nothing more.

So it really depends on the person.

The data are a little older, but I'm just posting it because I happened to have the link on hand. Anyone who wants can easily find more up-to-date stats. In any event, it's not as though there's been fundamental shifts in criminal behaviour where they've all decided not to carry knives all of a sudden.

Self-defence has more BS in it than any field I know. It is truly unbelievable that people will teach poorly-researched hearsay as fact and as basis for important, life-and-death personal decisions. That kind of crap would not be tolerated in any other profession. I wish there would be a rash of lawsuits to clean out the trash, and you'd see companies like CDT, Interpersonal Defence, etc. just vanish from the face of the earth.
