| I just purchased a 21 inch ASP baton but it seems just a bit too short! I was planning on getting a 26 inch but I am not sure. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks! |

| I don't think that it's a good idea to buy long ASP baton if you want to carry it in the streets. As for me, I prefer 16" batons - they are not bulky and good for the carry on the regular basis. But if you keep baton in the car, there's no difference regarding the size, and 26" baton would be normal, but if you plan to use it in the tight spaces, that's better to get shorter baton. |

Length makes a big difference in terms of the amount of force that is generated through leverage. I definitely advise the longer ones.
Collapsible batons are always a little bulky, but the difference in portability from one size to another is not dramatic, whereas the difference in effectiveness IS.
Also, the users I know all say that they favour Monadnock over ASP, so do check out the different brands before buying. |

I just reviewed the info on the collapsible baton products. Kelly McCann ("Jim Grover") reviews them in his tape on collapsible baton tactics. It's a little old, but at the time he was saying that the Monadnock autolock seems to have the best construction, and the button lock keeps you from having to bang the tip of the baton against a hard surface to close it. Over time the repeated knocks cause little bends in the segments, which interferes with the smooth opening action.
Downsides are that the autolock was one of the most expensive products he tested, and the ball bearings were "annoying" at first, but he got used to this.
He rated the Winchester very negatively, saying it was far too heavy.
I don't carry, because telescoping batons are illegal for civilian carry in my jurisdiction. But most of the people I know who do carry, favour the Monadnock.

|

I am doing some research for a short story in which one of my characters, former law enforcement officer, uses a pair of tonfas that collapse like an ASP baton. I know what your saying, that's impossible. The writting is just for fun, I'm really an engineering student, and if I could just get my hands on some unbreakabillium I wouldn't be an engineering student, I'd be an rich.
Any way, I am have some trouble finding reference material for police style PR-24 and straight batton techniques. Specifically, I am looking for the terminology that describes the grips, grip changes, blocks, guards, strikes, as well as the immobilization techniques.
Please respond to nkuzmik@yahoo.com if you think you can help.
Thank you. |

There are a lot of handbooks out there, such as CQB: Close-Quarters Battle by Mark Lonsdale of STTU. I can attest that that one in particular has a lot of photo sequences and description of techniques, though I don't care much for the book as a whole. I believe Takayuki Kubota also did some stuff with the PR-24.
The PR-24 is based on the traditional Okinawan karate weapon called the tonfa, which is basically a millstone handle.
Enjoy writing your book. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com

I don't think they're legal to carry on your person in England--in fact I'm pretty sure they're not.
If your research tells you otherwise, then get the Monadnock. |

Yes!! This is actually what I came to this forum to find out/ask about. The weapons I am currently learning to use. The Tonfas. I have done some extensive searching and have managed to find nothing on some techniques and tips using the tonfas. I was wondering if anyone knew a place where I could find some self teaching techniques with the tonfas. I am not looking for places that ask you to buy their dvd, books, or pay to dowload their .pdf files. I am just looking for a place that has images and/or videos showing techniques using these weapons, and I am looking for them to be free. If anyone knows where I might be able to find what I'm looking for, I would sincerely appreciate a point in that direction.
Eagerly awaiting a reply,

Regarding collapsible batons
I certainly don’t want to be hit with one, I think it would hurt. But collapsible batons are too light to be able to drop an enraged individual. I think that a bludgeoning weapon needs more weight to be effective. Hitting someone with a collapsible baton is too much like hitting with a chop stick when what is needed is a baseball bat. |

Dude, they look thin, but unless you've worked with them firsthand, think again. They put a lot of weight and speed into the little metal ball at the end, and their impact is several times greater than your strongest punch, and by virtue of leverage, it's faster and has a better reach too. If it were not so, then cops wouldn't have to train extensively how to NOT break bones when using them.
Train with the batons, then talk. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com

“Train with the batons, then talk.”
Have you used one in a real SD situation? Non cops have posted on the web saying that the batons suck for real use. I don’t trust what cops say.
The minimum impact that I would want in a club would be the equivalent of a ball peen hammer. Does a baton equal that? |

Absolutely--and much more because of momentum/speed. Like I said, train with it, then talk. Test it like you test a knife, smash it into stuff to see the tip penetration for yourself. That little metal ball on the end is a nightmare.
I'm talking about a quality Monadnock here, not an 18 inch long gizmotch that says "Made in Taiwan".
Frankly, I wouldn't rather be struck with one of those than a baseball bat, and I'd actually rather be attacked with the baseball bat than with the baton because they can move so damn fast. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com
