Hi guys & gals, I have just joined this forum so first of all I want to say Hi to everyone. So ... "HI" Very Happy

I hope there are some really experienced and reasonable people who has some experience in self defense and street fighting. I'm searching for something quick to learn, not very time consuming, yet highly effective. I was searching inet (just like any sain person would probably do) and found this. Here's the link: http://www.selfdefenseelite.com

It looks great, but it is not actually a school in a real word. It is a DVD set and that is what I am concerned about. Shocked

I'd like to know what do you think about the system and whather it is worth buying these DVDs... I don't want to fall to some scum. I want to learn how to fight effectively, that's all.

Thank you in advance. And please be actual and reasonable. I want true opinions, not some shouts to the dark. Idea

Thank you all very much.

Damian Ross's material is typical WW2 combatives stuff, similar to what is taught by Cestari, Kelly McCann, etc.

The strength of this paradigm is that the material is simple, effective, and easy to learn.

The weakness is that most of the content they teach tends to be "dead training"--that is, they show moves, but they don't give a training method that will allow you to make the stuff work against a resisting opponent.

Ross's program seems to cover the essential areas of fighting for SD: stand-up, grabs/clinch, ground, weapons, and multiple attackers. Some time is wasted on "killing" techniques that you really don't need to know for SD, and will just get you in trouble if you ever try and do them. But it figures: Ross is a WW2 combatives guy, and assassination techniques are a huge part of their heritage. He really hasn't stepped out of his

So there you go, it's got its positives and negatives. You'll never see me buying it for $500, but I wouldn't bad-mouth it either.

Sorry, I had a sentence fragment there, I got distracted and was writing some other stuff...

What I mean is that it's ridiculous for Ross to be spending two volumes on "killing" techniques which won't do any civilian any good. That assassination stuff is just part of the WW2 combatives heritage, and in developing this program, it looks like he hasn't stepped out of his own head to think about what ought to be taught and what shouldn't be... what's actually useful to people?

For $500, you can get a lot of other good stuff instead, that is both street-realistic and "alive".

Here is what I mean by aliveness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imjmLWj5WCU

If you're serious about surviving violent crime, and not just wanting to learn to kick ass, get hold of Tony Blauer's "Cerebral Self-Defence", Gavin DeBecker's "The Gift of Fear" and Sanford Strong's "Strong On Defense".

If I had $500 to spend on training videos for a beginner, I'd be buying stuff from Kelly McCann, Tony Blauer, or Richard Dimitri, then supplementing them with stuff that has more alive training such as Luis Gutierrez's ISR Matrix (his clinch-with-cloth programs are outstanding, and so is practically everything that comes out of Straight Blast Gym), or the Dog Brothers' Die Less Often program.
