This is probably kind of a silly question, but a thought just occurred to me. If you're successfully fending off an attacker (but not using excessive force), and all of a sudden he screams "help!" at the top of his lungs, what would you do? Would it make much of a difference if both of you yelled for help at the same time? How about if you yelled for help or screamed "get off of me!" when the fight started? If worst comes to worst, can you arrange for a polygraph test to be conducted? How about if you let your opponent land a few visible marks on you (if it's safe to do so) so the police are less likely to believe her or his lie? Thanks.

This is a VERY legit question, and it's good to see some real thought on this board instead of the usual stupidity.

Tony Blauer (and myself) recommend the use of body language and verbal defusion in the pre-contact phase of the confrontation, not just so it give you the best chance of not having to fight, not just so he'll never see your sucker-punch coming, but also for the benefit of bystanders: "Well, that guy had his hands open like he was trying to calm the guy and said three times, 'let's talk about this'".

There's also specific things that should be yelled to optimize bystander reactions. For instance, often when a guy attacks a woman in a public place, bystanders are reluctant to intervene because they assume there's a pre-existing relationship. It's considered a "private matter" that they don't want to get involved with. Controlled experiments published by university social psyc research labs have shown that when a woman yelled "Why are you doing this to me? I don't even know you!" bystanders were very likely to assist. Contrary to what many retards in the self-defence industry say, yelling "Fire" is extremely INEFFECTIVE because it confuses people. It heightens their sense of "um, I REALLY don't quite get what's happening here, I'd better stay out of this".

OK, so the police are here, the BG is probably either playacting his innocence or unconscious, but right now, the police see you fighting someone and don't realize what's been happening, and that everything you're doing is within the limitations of self-defence exemptive statutes.

How do you not get shot by the cops?

First off, your risks of being attacked by police due to a misunderstanding are much lower than you'd think. If you're nonwhite, you might fear racism, and to some degree you'd be right. But when Canadian or American police have MISTAKENLY harmed a COMPLETELY INNOCENT person, one of the most pervasive common factors is simply: THE INNOCENT VICTIM DIDN'T SPEAK GOOD ENGLISH. Look into the Diallo case, the Dziekanski case, and so on. You'll find that much of the time, the police misconduct occurred AFTER A FAILED ATTEMPT TO COMMUNICATE. Now either the police misjudged their victim's subsequent actions (wasn't following orders to turn, put their hands up, etc.) or just got frustrated and said, "to hell with this, let's taser the jerk".

So? COMMUNICATE.

The book by Matt Thomas, Denise Loveday, and Larry Strauss presents a fairly compelling formula for what you ought to say to police, starting on page 197. The phrases are (in order)

Thank God you're here.
I'm [first name] and I'm a [occupation].
This man attacked me.
I think I need a doctor.
Should I talk to a lawyer?

They explain the rationale behind each statement, and it's really quite clever how they use their choice of words to predispose the police in your favour.

Now, about body language.

Police experiments in shoot/no-shoot judgment have shown us exactly the factors that cause police to irresponsibly shoot an innocent person. Some good news: several of them are under your direct control, because they have to do with the behaviour of the victim. One experimental protocol involved a simulation where the officer arrives at a scene and sees person A standing over person B, with A's back to the officer. The good news for A is that the officer "has the drop on him" so to speak. This makes the officer FEEL SAFER, making him less likely to shoot. Bad news for A: with him facing away, it's harder for the officer to read A's body language since he's facing away. He now has to turn to face the officer without the officer panicking and shooting him. Officer issues a command: don't move, hands up, turn around, whatever. So... what will increase or decrease the likelihood that the officer will shoot A?

The experiments showed that police are MOST LIKELY to shoot A when

1) hands are low
2) they turn around while still in a crouch
3) hands are clenched

Yes, there are other factors that you can't do much about. You're more likely to be shot if you're young and/or wearing scruffy clothing. You're obviously most likely to be shot if you're black. But really, we should be interested in the things we CAN do something about... RIGHT NOW.

Note that when an officer is holding a gun out at eye level, the slide typically occludes their vision of everything below the sternum.

Give the officer what he WANTS to see, not what he thinks he wants to see. Here's what he wants to see.

1) You freeze. Take a moment to think.
2) Slowly, you straighten out your body completely, while raising your hands above your head. Your hands are open, the "open-hand-shape" is clearly visible to the officer.
3) Slowly, you turn around to face the officer. If it's dark, he's probably shining a flashlight in your face. Don't flinch to cover your eyes. Keep your movements slow.
4) Say the five phrases I mentioned earlier.

If someone threatens your friends or family and you yell something like "don't you dare lay a hand on (name)" or "he's half your size!", would that go a long way towards getting bystanders' attention? Thanks very much for your response, by the way.

You have the right idea, and make a good point about using verbal tactics that fit the context.

Oh, and NEVER agree to a polygraph. Psychologists agree, those things are nonsense.
