When disarming a knife IRL, there are often factors that interfere with your ability to really secure the opponent's knife arm--sweat, blood, the attacker's sheer strength.

Lacking these adverse factors, bad training often gives us an inflated sense of how effective our disarms could be. This is probably why a lot of people train those silly wristlocks, strips, snakes, and so forth, thinking them to be applicable in real self-defence situations. It works in the drill, with a cooperative opponent. To make things worse, we may be training with equipment that actually facilitates your grip: for instance, cordura-coated pads that squish slightly, and have high friction coefficients and natural "handles" (mainly at the joints and edges) that are easy to snag. This makes controlling the arm ridiculously easy. Or another example, when I used to train disarms that involved direct attacks to the hand, say peeling the base of the thumb, or hitting the metacarpals hard to hyperflex the wrist, it seemed like a good idea to wear mountain-biking gloves while doing this, to protect the trainer. But you'll quickly notice that when the bad guy's wearing these gloves, it makes it really easy to grab him at the wrist. You could have really crappy technique (e.g. not "following") and still hold onto that wrist.

Put those gloves away. Leave them for when you're doing classical Filipino defangs, not when you're doing self-defence.

Gear up your bad guy properly. Firm rubber knife with lipstick on the edge of the blade for feedback. NO pads on the hands or arms. FIST or High Gear helmet. Chest protector if you've got it. AND SMEAR SEX JELLY ON both hands and arms to simulate blood or sweat, to make the grip more difficult. (Both arms because, remember, you're going to train in responding to him transferring the knife from one hand to the other.)

A plus is that if you have smartasses in your class who've done self-defence training in classical martial art schools and they try to demonstrate their stupid wristlocks and stuff, they won't be able to do 'em.

We've all probably heard at times that we should "slime" our arms when working on disarms, but we don't always do it.

It's important. DON'T FORGET THE SEX JELLY.

I should mention, credit for the idea should go to Jim Wagner, who trains with stage blood, and trainers like Darren Laur who also talk about using lubricants in anti-knife training to simulate sweat and blood. I recommend a cheap generic sexual lubricant because it's non-toxic, non-irritating, and washes off easily.
