Alright, so I am a college student with my license suspended. As a result, I have been spending a lot of time around less savory neighborhoods in the middle of the night lately...walking to friends' houses, late classes, and so forth. I am a pretty big person, so I don't usually get hassled often, but I have no doubt that I am going to have an issue with SOMEONE eventually. Bad neighborhoods alone at night. Its inevitable. So, I have been looking for a self defense weapon, and I have to say that (as a fencing student) the sword is looking like quite a good option...but its a sword. Noone carries a sword, its retarded...but let me know what you think.
Right now I carry a 6" folder, but to be perfectly honest I don't know how to fight with a knife, and if I pull it on someone similarly armed I'm likely to just get stabbed.
My first option would be a gun, but in california concealed carry is essentially illegal, and open carry requires that you keep the gun unloaded. I don't want to try to pop in a magazine and cycle the action in a panic situation...its not practical.
"Billy clubs" are illegal. That includes batons and a host of obscure weapons.
A small sword, on the other hand, sounds perfect. Something like a sidesword or shortened Epee with a sharp tip. Its light, its always "loaded", its totally legal to carry anywhere I would try to carry a gun in cali, I have experience using it, and the intimidation factor is really high. Unless the person has a gun, there really aren't many better weapons than a sword...noone wants to get stabbed or get cut to ribbons, and its got a great reach. The only real problem I see is that...to be honest...carrying a sword around looks ridiculous and makes people think you are some sort of crazed survivalist. I can probably eliminate that by carrying a stripped down version...say a pistol grip epee shortened with the bell guard removed.
Is it just me, or does a sword look like a perfectly viable option for self defense? |

We say better to carry something then nothing especially if you are in troubled neighborhoods. Who cares if people think your a highlander? More than likely you would go home at night! _________________ Best Safety And Defense

I'm surprised to hear that it's legal for carry in public in Cali. That's not the case in most places in the US, I believe. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com
