Hey. First a bit about myself.

I'm 20 years old, and trained slightly in martial arts/self defense. In no way a master, though. I am also going to be joining with my local police service in the next few years.

Today I was drawing money out of a bank at 2100, still slightly light out.

As I tried to take out some cash, some guy came up and put his arm over my shoulder and put a knife to the right side of my neck.

Complying, I gave him $200 out of my bank account and he left with no further incident. I gave chase after I made sure I was okay, but he got into a truck down the road and drove off with his accomplice.

Just asking - what can I really do in a situation like that? I feel strange. I was calm the entire time and didn't panic, but now I feel like there's something I should have been able to do. But all my options just seemed to turn to that I would've been stabbed in the throat or something along those lines.

Anyone?

You may not feel like it, but it looks like you did well! "Static-line" knife defences (disarming him when he's threatening you with a knife at close range) aren't that difficult if you're trained in them... depending on the situation, for instance, it's much tougher if he's got a good grab on your clothing and pressing you hard against a wall, etc. But even in the best of circumstances, it's by no mean a sure bet. (I am very well trained and I'd guess I'd succeed in the disarm without being BADLY cut about 80% of the time.)

If you can "buy your way out" with $200, then great! It beats running the risk of getting cut! Even risking a not-TOO-bad cut that MIGHT result in long-term nerve or muscle damage isn't worth $200. You came away with a sweet, sweet deal my friend.

For the record, the disarm would involve feigned compliance, hands in a "submissive posture" near the knife-hand, then suddenly clamping his knife hand/arm against your own body so that it cannot move to cut you, turning in towards him, and then some sort of twisting or leverage technique combined with headbutts and knees. Details would depend on the exact scenario. As I said, it's not a sure thing, and would only make sense if you believed that it was the only way to prevent further violence to yourself or others.

If you want specifics, look into Tony Blauer's "Controlling the Blade" or a knife defence program by Richard Dimitri. Since most knife attacks are "dynamic line" (stabbing), my favoured instructional materials are "Die Less Often" by Marc Denny, "STAB" by Karl Tanswell, and "RedZone" by Jerry Wetzel.

There is always that thought in your head that something else could have been done but you did well. What if is always something people think about when a situation like that happens. Don't worry about the money, you got away with your life. Next time take the license plate number and call the cops. Your goal is to take in as much information as you can. Good luck.

You reacted great! Like MBatcho1 said get his info next time.

We read another post on this forum where a man came in and attacked this fellows' family and in the heat of it the fellow went after the guy after he got him out of the apt. Now he is battling it in court since he looks like the aggressor.
