I know that there are a lot of things you can use on dogs. Everything from firearms, sticks, pepper spray and so on. I am curious as to how you would defend yourself if you were suddenly attacked by a big attack dog, if you were unarmed?

I have taken several bites from a police dog while I was wearing arm protection and have thought a lot about this. I think I have come up with a few good answers but I am curious if one, this has ever happened to you and two if you have any ideas on what you would do if attacked by a big mean dog?

One thing I like to use is a cheap stun gun and spark it in front of the dog; it usually puts the fear of God in them. If they insist on attacking you; it's in your hand to blast them for 5-10 seconds and they should drop. A good knife also won't hurt...

I had a situation that took place in a city park in Texas in 2004.I had taken my six year old daughter to the park to swing and there was a large jungle gym like thing there, similar to what one sees at a McDonald's playground only considerably larger. It was a new park with little trees held erect by stakes and strings. We were walking to my truck which was about 100 yards away. The playground was about the same distance behind us when I looked up and saw a pitbull terrier charging at us.This cocker was snarling and terrifying my child.I can't describe the fear I felt, not for me,for my daughter. This thing would kill her.No trees to climb, can't out run it,if I hold her over my head it will bite me and I'll drop her and be unable to defend her.Suddenly,I remember hearing that their jaws lock onto what they bite.Whether true or not I don't know, but that was what I heard.I told my hysterical daughter that no matter what happens STAY BEHIND ME!KEEP ME BETWEEN YOU AND THAT DOG! Fortunately in Texas we are allowed to carry a good knife. The law allows up to a 5 inch blade, single edge. The plan was offer my left arm, lock the beastie to me and slit it's throat then fall on top of it till it bled out. This dog will NOT pass ! The fear evapourated as soon as the plan formulated. The dog must have sensed something (maybe our guardian angel?)and broke off it's attack.Took me 20 minutes to calm my daughter down.I've thanked God for having that knife and often wondered what I would have done if unarmed.I believe that protective instinct would have kicked in and I would have attempted to get a hold of the dogs back legs somehow and pick/swing it around and beat its' head into the sidewalk till it stopped moving or my strength gave out. That dog would NOT pass!

I think stun guns and pepper sprays could be a great help here, as they are designed to give you time for running. That is my IMHO, though every situation is unique.

Hi

I have been bitten by a street dog two weeks ago, and it wasn't the first time. The first time was in the mountain. I was on the marked path, and suddenley a big dog (http://www.ciobanesc.ro/carpatin/galerie%20foto%201.htm) appeared in front of me, and he bite my shank. The second one was a middle weight dog. This time I was on the bicycle. He had These both moments I saw the dogs when they appered. The third time I didn't see him. I just felt his fangs.

My advices:

- if you see a dog who comes to you with the purpose to attack you, you may cover one hand with a shirt or jacket and hold these hand in face of him, and with other hand hit him between his eyes.

- use anithing you have at disposal: a rock, an auto screen whiper, a stick, your shoe if you have a heavy one

- do not let the children to play with some kind of dogs

- do not come so close with the dogs who have puppies

- after you were bite you must go to the hospital; even if the dog was vaccinated, the salive holds a lot of viruses and bacterias

- first aid: wash your wound with soap and desinfect with oxigenated water or sanitary alcohol

- try to avoid that dog; they may keep you in their mind

As long as we can wish for weapons, I'll take a 12g shotgun. Wink But the original question was, how to defend against a dog when you are unarmed.

In the army we were told that if a dog is approaching, and you are unable to flee, stand your ground and scream at it and flail your arms, in an effort to make it back down. You can't outrun it, and trying to will probably encourage it's attack. If that doesn't work, the best thing to do if the dog does not have hold of you yet is to kick it as hard as possible in the body. If it does bite down, go for his eyes - push your fingers as far into them as they'll go. Don't go down to the ground with it, and if you do, protect your throat area and try to control it's head or muzzle as best you can. It's teeth are it's only weapon. It's weak point are it's eyes and throat / neck area. The nose is sensitive too. I don't think punching it's body will get you anywhere...

I've never been attacked by a dog and have no experience with this stuff - this is just what Uncle Sam told us.

If I had no weapons, I would scream and kick and punch and bite even! Get dominance the fastest way. Poke eyes even. I know that sounds brutal but it's me or the dog. I choose me.
I also heard that you can punch your fist into it's throat and that blocks the airway so they have to let go of you. They also say that usually gets them to run away. Who knows?
