Hello there, I'm new to this forum so please forgive me if this is in the wrong place.
Recently I bought this hollow handle survival knife which was on sale (it was quite cheap which is why I bought it). I blades is is good and the handle is aluminum. the only thing I am worried about is the blade to handle connection. I was just wondering, has anyone else had any experience with hollow hjandle survival knives and if so, how do they compare with solid sheath knives. _________________ "Be prepared" |

Great question. The solidity of hollow-handle survival knives is always in question. The "tang" is the portion of the blade metal that is inside the handle. When force is applied to the blade, it torques the blade against the handle (where your grip is). The longer the tang, the more "solid" you can expect the knife to be (of course there are other factors... composition, quality of workmanship, etc.). Some knives have no tang at all. Or, a tang might be just a stub (I think they call this a bolt tang or stub tang), it can protrude through half the handle ("half-tang") or the piece of metal can be continuous through the whole handle ("full-tang").
Obviously a hollow-handle knife has little or no tang, and this seriously compromises its strength and integrity. For this reason, I've never known a serious knife-maker to make hollow-handle knives; they're usually made cheap and dirty by Chinese manufacturers. You've got yourself a cheap toy there which may be handy for some car camping trips, whittling marshmallow sticks and so forth, but not something that can be counted on for serious use.
To be fair, a lot of us carry folding knives, and they have almost no tang to speak of. Yet their manufacture has been refined over the decades, and when you pick up a Cold Steel, Benchmade, or Spyderco for $1-300, you know you're getting a solid piece of equipment. Of course, they can't be expected to do the same things as a full-tang fixed-blade knife.
It's all a matter of what you expect your knife to DO. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com

Oh, right. I forgot, there's the rat tail tang, which is where the blade tapers back into a little spike that runs the length of the handle, but it's just skinny, that's all. I never really liked those, they feel flimsy to me, though I suppose that depends on the composition, and how it's affixed to the rest of the handle.
Thought I'd be able to find a better site for you than those, but have a look, it'll give you some idea what tangs are all about. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com
