Anticipating a possible fight that could break out any day, I've been brushing up on some old karate techniques that I learned years and years ago. And (I know this sounds lame) I've analyzed every possible attack he might throw on me, and thought a lot about how I would react. That way, even though I hardly remember a lick of martial arts, I'll still be somewhat prepared. However, one thing they never taught us was what to do if the attacker decides to just charge at you. I highly doubt that in that situation, a simple front kick would overpower a man pummeling you at full force.

What do you mean by "charge at"? Tackle? Wild haymaker? Just running toward you? You might want to look into some of the more functional contemporary systems that address more realistic street attacks, such as Blauer Tactical (particularly his video on Rage Attacks) and ISR Matrix. I mean, if you don't know what you'd do if a guy is charging at you, what the hell use is the system you learned?

Learning how to avoid the fight in the first place is a better system of self-defense.

Really? You've analyzed every possible attack that he could throw? You do realize that's impossible, right? And furthermore you've already decided in advance how you're going to react? We're talking about real life, right? Not a video game?

To answer your question "What if he charges you?", you die.

I think it's too hard to determine how you would react to situations. I know there is ways I would like to react and believe I would but it doesn't happen that way.
While in police training and put in scenarios I thought I would react this way but I reacted totally opposite.

I think there are some options against some guy coming at you with haymakers. Tony Blauer calls his the Spear or Wedge. I also have seen some of Sammy Franco's material (Widowmaker 1 and 2) and he also advocated a similar technique called the Wedge. You simply place your palms together while your arms block his haymakers. You just go forward palm smashing him with noth hands and then razzing him (ex.=eye rakes/gouges) and then other techniques such a knee strike, etc. Again, it's one of the options and I have no affiliations with a particular style or system. I just like to supplement other techniques from other RBSD programs and try them out with a partner.

Blauer calls it the Spear, and it's Chris Clugston who calls it the Wedge. Several other systems have the same move and call it the Dive (e.g. ISR Matrix).

Incidentally, Clugston is a total douchebag and has been on here acting like a total jackass.

Razing and the Widowmaker are very much like Blauer's "Blender" and his student Richard Dimitri's "Shredder". Dimitri was a student of Blauer when he started out, and was briefly a partner of Franco. You do the math.

I never heard of Chris Clugston. As for the other 3, I like all of their material.

You're not missing anything. Anything he does that's valid, you've seen elsewhere.

Other than that, I have only seen Clugston on those TRS fighter of the month ads.

Sammy Franco calls it "webbing as" stated in "Widowmaker" program. Sorry for the brain fart. He then uses the clinch or anchoring and then a lot of razing methods as a followthrough.

Razing consists of a combination of hammerfists, rakes, clawing/gouging techniques while clinching with the other hand. It's designed to disorient as well as overwhelm him. Webbing is the first tihing before razing which is a palm smash with both hands to the face. It is said to be very damaging and cause whiplash to the neck. Again, these are not to be used unless your life is in danger but it is good to have.

A neck twist is also followed up after razing if you wanted to end it that way. Again, it's considered a lethal technique and you should exercise caution. Only employed if your life is in danger.

Tuco, thanks for the clarification. Franco's students love to throw the terminology around and don't like to say what they actually mean by anything because it's all "super-secret".

Everything they do can be found in WW2 combatives, JKD, and/or Blauer Systems, but I've never been able to correspond the terms with the actual movements.

I love webbing. It's called the steeple in WW2 combatives, and much like the "dive" or Blauer's "SPEAR".
