Forgive me if you see this same post at a bunch of different sites, I'm trying to get everyone's opinion.

Has anybody worked on deploying a tactical folder, fixed blade, or some other weapon after being taken down to the ground? I was working on some striking techniques on my back today and realized if I had a blade in my front or back pocket, it might be really difficult to get to if a guy was on top of me. I could carry it on the side, but then it's out in the open and civilians and/or cops might not be thrilled to see that.

Has anybody thought about this? Better yet, has anyone trained doing it?

Yes, trained deployment from various positions, including clinch and grapple, using a drone folder and rubber eye goggles. Not sure what you mean by "on the side" as opposed to a front or back pocket. I carry clipped folder to front pants pocket, dominant side.

Lots of drilling for disarming and retention on the ground (both symmetrical and asymmetrical) using rubber knives as well.

Positioning is the key to the ground. How is your jits?

However, as I'm sure you've noticed from my posts, I'm starting to de-emphasize the use of the tac folder. Against a knife, I prefer to have both hands free. Folder comes out only against multiple opponents, because the mechanics of the knife allows for footwork independent of my attacking lines.

Training folders are often referred to as "drones".
