I was asked this the other day. What do you absolutely fear the most in terms of self-defense, what you just are terrified at thinking of having to defend against?

Mine would probably be someone coming up to me and just absolutely wanting to kill me, not a robbery or anything of that nature, someone walking up with a knife and wanting me dead. No mercy. It scares me sh**less. Especially when thought of in sudden attack. Surprised

When you feel fearful of a specific kind of attack, there are two things you should do in response. One is to train yourself specifically in response to fear itself: stress-inoculation, cognitive reframing, learning to use adrenaline-friendly, gross-motor techniques that will function well when you are afraid. The other is to train yourself specifically to deal with that kind of attack. For situations where a guy with a knife is trying to stab you to death, consider the RedZone, STAB, and "Die Less Often" programs.

Sweet, I am still looking for a good school up here. In peoples opinions is TKD or karate or hapkido better in terms of street self defense, thats all there is up here.

Anyway, BJ lessons any total fears for you?

avdrummerboy, I remember having the conversation about trying to find a training place for you. Your town is small, and that makes it tough. Have a look at each of those places. If any of them trains alive and with contact, that's the place for you.

Aliveness explained here: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=AWfK6aqWiNU

Most TKD, karate, and hapkido places are dead, not alive. In that case, you have to look at other kinds of options:
- boxing
- wrestling
- backyard/garage training with friends, using stuff from videos, online, etc. (be careful: choose training partners who are mature and reliable, "foolproof" the training area (secure ground surface, sharps, unsafe obstacles, things on shelves that can fall, etc.) invest money in safety precautions such as padding, equipment, rubber knives)

My TOTAL FEAR is girls who drag their teeth when they give head. OUCH.

For dealing with fear in self-defence, Tony Blauer has a lot of good stuff. Buy his audio, "Cerebral Self-Defence: The Mental Edge".

Darren Laur has some free articles online too, I think.

Gavin DeBecker's book, "The Gift of Fear" is a classic.
