Hi all,
I’m new here. great forum!
I’ve been practicing for 20 over years and I have come to believe that pain and injuries, and the ability to endure them may be a big factor in deciding the outcome of a fight/match? anyone agree? most of the time, the emphasis it seems is to focus on one's skills/abilities/technical proficiency etc.
but the fact and reality of fighting remains - however good one is, if one does not have a high pain threshold, one will succumb quickly at the first sign of pain/injury/blood. so the question is, how does one handle pain?
is there a mental/physical training to withstand pain? how would you react to, say, a broken nose, teeth, a kick to the groin/ribs, a broken arm(amber)?
The question is, will you/should one carry on fighting despite a bloodied face or simply surrender? |

A lot of it is technique, too. Sure at first you take punches squarely across your nose. Your nose breaks, and you learn to better angle your face so punches slide off. The first time you get nailed in the ribs you probably weren’t breathing right. It hurts and later bruises. Later you learn to exhale while being hit. Your techniques, stances, and posture change as you get more comfortable fighting; as does your understanding of your art. So how do you deal with pain? You adapt.
Is there mental/physical training to withstand pain?
An interesting study found that pain tolerance is also cultural. Certain cultures have developed higher pain tolerances than others. I discover a very interesting site winyourmmafight.com. Desensitize through body-impact training. Work your way up gradually. RBSD guys like Jim Wagner also do things like put a small rock in their shoe during drills to simulate the pain and restricted mobility that results from having an injured foot. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com

Is there a scale of pain or a unit that we can measure pain in? If not I do not know how much I can take. Well when I have no choice I will be taking a lot. _________________ Get your Taser C2 while you still can at http://www.stungunsupply.com/products/taser/ |

| Pain tolerance doesn't mean anything if they stab you in the throat. |

Self-defence is not all one thing. There's a lot of stuff that COULD happen, and you train your best to deal with the range of possible things that could come up. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com

Pain tolerance is an ASSET in self-defence--not a panacea. There ARE NO panaceas in self-defence. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com

Probably a lot if their used to street fights.
In the fights I lost due to factors such as this, it wasn't so much the pain as the shock of the violence of the encounter. I learned the hard way and wouldn't say I'm an expert in taking shock and having positive reactions to aggression now either. Drills, such as having your sparring partner come at you swearing and spitting etc... can help with this. Learning to handle that rush of adrenaline which makes your heart feel like it's going to jump out of your chest and things like that.
The pain is not really the issue, adrenaline will often cover up the pain anyway I found. |

There's a saying that "If you ask the wrong question, you'll get the wrong answer."
The OP is raising a very specific issue here, whose importance to self-defence cannot be denied. We NEED to be able to take hits, grinding, shock, and various forms of discomfort, and continue to function and think and fight.
As for your opponent, yeah, causing him pain will sometimes help your cause if you can get him to flinch or stop attacking you, even turn tail and ditch. But mainly what you're going to be doing to him is knocking him out, destroying his base, preventing him from breathing, or breaking limbs. Those are your primary means of stopping his attack, and have nothing to do with pain. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com

True, sparring will do that though. Boxing etc.... If not boxing then full contact work with a partner with minimal padding like gloves gum shield and headgear. |

Yes, that is the main method of developing pain tolerance, since it is "built-in" to training and can be titrated to the level of intensity appropriate to the student. _________________ blowjoblessons@gmail.com

Here is the way I look at it.
When you are young, you fall down, scrape your knee and immediately start crying.
After a couple fall downs you know what to expect and you no longer cry. You pain threshold has been trained to take more so you dont start crying at the sight of blood.
I think that the same goes for fighting. When you know what a broken nose feels like and you have been hit several times in the face and or stomach, you have an idea of whats going on and you can take it.
That is how it has worked for me anyway.
Does anyone still cry when they get a shot? Be honest lol. _________________ Matthew Batcho

I am not sure how much pain I can take. An ass kicking is an ass kicking. I would like to think for survival, you take whatever was coming and be the one coming home. My wife is prior law enforcment and she always had to have the mental thought of "I am the one coming home tonight, no matter what situation I am in". _________________ Best Safety And Defense
