Firstly, this is a non-commercial or semi-commercial post. This is one of my favorite forums and I wouldn't spam here. Okay, I've been working on a self-defence-online site for a month or two now, and I thought I'd post about it here..

I started on this site some months back - I was talking online with an american girl whose a friend, and she was telling me how she was frightened of her boyfriend when he gets in a temper. As this boyfriend is 6 foot something and she's much smaller, it really irritated me (I hate bullies). Anyway, I suggested that she join a self defense class - the exercise would do her good, and she'd be much more confident dealing with her boyfriend. But it turns out that all the good self defense classes in her area are too expensive for her.

Okay, so I'm going to try to do something about it. Now, I'm in the east, and I'm an experienced martial artist - so I talked to a few other martial arts teachers here, and we've decided to float an online course. It's reasonably cheap ($100 for a course lasting about 3 months) and it'll teach you everything we can about defending yourself in a bad situation.

However, we're not doing this just for the money, but more to help people like the girl I mentioned, so, for every person who buys the course, we'll give it to two people who genuinely need it for free, and to one other person at a half-price discount - This way we handle our running expenses AND can help the most people possible. And the training is GOOD - very detailed and very personalized, with a master always available (even on a daily basis) for advice via e-mail or even instant messenger. All the Sensei are very patient men, so the training will be thorough, even online.

I don't care, you're not the first person to offer fee-for-service on this website, at least you're straight up about it. If the admins don't like it, they'll delete your post. I personally think your website looks like a joke, but who knows? Ninjas are known for hiding in plain sight. Just imagine--the unbeatable fighting secrets people have sought all their lives, camouflaged in a fanciful site that looks like it was made by a 13-year-old.

Naw, I don't mind - I kind of like you, to be honest.
Hmm - I'm not offering the secrets of the ninja at all, just those techniques from a dozen arts (including ninjutsu) that are simple enough in execution to be taught online - you understand the problem with teaching someone online, obviously. The focus is SD -um, have you seen the site lately - cause I've revamped it a lot.

Okay, about the 13 year old - valid point - it's the first time I ever made a site. but it seems there's also an east-west gap here, something I can't understand. For example, in the interior pages of the site, I've tried to give some idea of ninjutsu techniques as taught in my ryu, but every one in the west just laughs. The weird part is I've shown the site to my fellow members and to my masters (translated for them, obviously) and they don't see anything funny. I'm puzzled.
Anyway man, any suggestions would REALLY be appreciated. See, we didn't have to put in the ninjutsu sections in the rear, but the teachers here wanted me to do it because they're rather proud of culturing a different strain of the art, and helping it to survive. I wouldn't LIKE to remove them, but I will if you think they're something incomprehensible to the western mind of somethng like that (no insults intended, mind you, just puzzled).

You did the site yourself! Well, that is actually quite an accomplishment, even if I'm not a fan of the style I have to say it's obvious a lot of work was put into it.

Looks-wise, it's quite cluttered, the imagery resembles the sort of thing that a kid might see in old comic books or He-Man packaging.

Some of the claims seem plain silly. Combined with the over-the-top graphics, they serve to alienate the Western audience.

Your use of language, sentence structure, vocabulary, are excellent.

The funny thing is, most easterers who see the site seem to like it. Wierd, isn't it? Anyway, what we've decided is to retain the present site, but to bar it to westerners, who think EXACTLY what you said they'd think Very Happy

You know, it's not just the site, the reaction is the same in real life as well - some time ago I entertained some americans in one of our dojo in the east, and they thought the interior decoration was 'over the top' the style of furnishing, the silk curtains and intricate carpets and banners and ornamental shields and weapons - and they actually said so. Strange, that a person who travelled half way around the world should so criticize the alien culture in which he found himself. We just ignored their rather pointed remarks, of course, but we never invited a westerner into any of our dojo again. It would have served no purpose.

So we're removing the SD aspect, teaching the root-basics of Ninjutsu itsels, and reserving this site for asians only (it'll say so, right on top) - later, those asians who show real talent will find it both cheap and easy to travel to our Temples in asia to continue their training.

About the SD, I really did want to help people like that girl, so I think I'll create an entirely new site that's entirely non-profit for the SD idea I had - I'll look at that resource you showed me first. Oh, my langage is good cause I have an Irish American mother and a Japanese father - I don't think I mentioned that. It's obvious that I'm eastern, not western though Laughing

Yup, redid it all over again. This time I threw out all the pages about ninjutsu, and put in some simple videos and pics instead. Also, sat with an eastern guy and made the language waaay simple, so easterners can understand it better. It might be a little too simple for the western taste (the language) but can't please everyone. The videos came out good - the attacker is a bit clumsy, but the defender moves well.
