Some man got out of his car at a red light and started to harass me while i was in my car, then started to chase me while i was driving home. First time i really felt threatened, so now i carry a skinner knife in my poket at all times, but i hear its illegal in my state (CA).

Well so what are my options? just leave a bat in my car? buy some pepper spray? need some ideas

If you don't want to leave the car, pepper spray will do the trick just fine. It should drop him like a bad habit. Personally I carry a pepper spray ring at 17% OC concentration and 2million SHUs for short range about 1 foot, and for long range (which would probably be good in a car) I carry wildfire 18% pepper spray at 3million SHU's. I don't really recommend mace, since some people are resistant to it. Pepper spray is far more effective. Also, a stun baton with long rang capability or a taser works well too (tasers have close to 100% effective rate and have both long and short range capability). All of these are great long range weapons, and I am pretty sure that all three are legal in California.

Don't get out of your car, and write down licence plate numbers. A good thing to keep in your car is a cell phone and a digital camera.

Or a non illegal one would be a can of anti freeze in your car, it sprays far and hurts like a bitch when it hits the eyes, unfortunatly the law knows this and the main compuny of Antifreeze have made the cans Extra big so its hard to carry and very noticeable but will still do the trick,
Another one is Ammonia. Buy a box of hair dye and keep the ammonia bottle, this is more leatheal than CS Gas. infact alot could cause permanent blindness.

buy some spray. mace is actually more effective that pepper spray, unlike what what said before. about 8% of people are naturally immune to pepper (oc) spray. unfortunately i am not. the knife is actually illegal to carry like that unless, it's under a couple inches. otherwise, CA penal code 12020 says that it is illegal to carry it any way other than in it's case or with a clip attached to your belt with an unobstructed view of it.

Why did he come harass you in the first place. Cause and effect, we are talking about the effect but what about the cause.

I think BJL is right on. Writing down the license will most likely scare him off. If not take a picture of him and the car. His angry face in the picture will tell a different story than when he is all cleaned up and smiling in court. Spray is a good option, I have been sprayed in the face twice, and have gotten contaminated several times from suspects that have been sprayed. It generally works if you use the write stuff. However you have to give it a couple of seconds for it to kick in. Avoid a fight if possible, I'm not saying don't spray him, just consider the possibility of him wandering into traffic blind and getting run over.
