Hello, ash_wednesday! Welcome to our board! I see, you're very active user. Thank you for your contribution. Cool
Well, here we can discuss everything connected with self defense - real criminal & self defense episodes, self defense techniques, weapons, etc. And there's also an off topic section - for the threads not connected with the specified problems.

Anyone wonder how young a person should be before they learn to defend themselves? As I mentioned in another thread, I was stabbed in the face by a guy on the street at the age of ten or so, so I just wondered. I know my mom got me the best martial arts teachers she could find just after the episode, even discarding a karate dojo she enrolled me in at first after watching a sessiion - she thought it wasn't practical enough. Finally she got me a good school, and though I've been in many scrapes since (I travel a lot) I've never been injured, knifed or shot since. It kind of makes me wonder how early a person should start training in a rather violent world (well, at least parts of it are).

It depends on the person, the time when he or she discovers that surrounding world is not ideal and realizes necessity of self defense preparedness. Some people don't pay attention to their safety until the end of their life.

Actually, I kind of wish that self defence wasn't necessary - yes, I know it's a naive wish, especially coming from someone whose practised ninjutsu for 20 years now, and is just about as lethal as they come; but I'm not a violent man at heart, and I wish that there weren't predators around, that everyone could just BE safe.

Silly, I know - kind of like wishing there was no war or poverty or hunger or disease. The simple brotherhood of human and human - it sometimes seems so far away.

Same as arath. However, as boogie man said once a person realized the real worl for what it is then they should learn. I have finally seen it for whats really there and now want to learn to defend myself. I am 18
