Hello!
greeneyes, thank you for your question, it's interesting and very inportant subject.
The situation you described is typical. Psycholigical aspects are of great importance in self defense. Your mindset will determine the issue of the battle. Remember: always manage to avoid physical contacts, fighting with an assailant, always try to escape.

Pepper mace is a good thing. If you face with one attacker, pepper spray will give you great chances to win; the most important point - you must be able to use it suddenly and very quickly. And escape straight away - run as quick as possible, and call the police.
But if a spray doesn't require lot of training before successful use, knives do. Do you have knife combat experience? If no, in most cases knife will be useless for you. And you must have special mindset towards the use of knife in the act of self defense.
Do your local laws permit to carry handguns? Get yourself S&W Chiefs special or Walther PPK - these weapons are good choice for women. I can tell you that to shot the assailant down with a gun is much more easier psychologically than to cut him with the knife.

- No, you're wrong, it's the dangerous mistake. Don't let him to put you on the ground. Otherwise you will lose your degree of freedom and ability to escape, it will be much more easier for him to stun you.
Remember: the optimal strategy - to stun an assailant with the sudden attack (spray his eyes with the mace, hit him in the groin, shoot him, etc) and then to escape and call the police. Do you have a possibility to practice the self defense techniques in a group? It will be quite useful for you, you will be more confident and psychologically prepared.
Good luck!

greeneyes, don't be afraid to hurt an assailant Exclamation If some guy decides to attack woman, he deserves the worst punishment. You can use all the means to repel violent agression, and justice will always be on your side.
And what do you think about purchasing a handgun? It will be the best protection for you. I don't recommend you to carry knife without any experience, in a hope of a casual chance of successful use. And don't carry pepper spray in a purse - it's not an appropriate place to keep it; the best place to keep the spray - the pocket; the spray will be easily accessible. If you carry it in your purse, there are great chances that you won't have enough time to take it in a case of a sudden attack.

If you don't know how to use a weapon then don't use it. You would have a better chance at hurting yourself then hurting anyone else.

As for womens self defence, Bruce Lee once said "The best self-defence for women is this: Kick him in the groan and run like hell." Of course that is a bit dated.

A switch blade in my state will land you in jail. Any weapon is no good unless it is in your hand & you are prepared to use it.

I have no idea where greeneyes is located, I think that switchblades are actually illegal throughout the US. They are here, too.

On the other hand, she may be referring to a tactical folder, and making a rookie nomenclature error.

I carry a pocket-clip folder too, mainly as a tool, secondarily as a symbol of self-sufficiency and self-agency, and only thirdly as a self-defence weapon. I do not believe that people should be carrying them unless they train with them. Training should consist of:

1) a good classical knife-fighting base like kali, lua, Sicilian knife-fighting, whatever--the point is you're learning movement
2) realistic training on quick deployment, retention, and use of the different levels of force trained in an "alive", resisting situation

My main weapons are comfortable and ergonomic footwear, and a cell phone.

There is a local self-defence instructor called Jesse Chan, who said that "The pen is mightier than the sword, because no one expects you to pull a pen out of their pocket and ram it seven inches up their nose."

I'll recommend six-chambered revolver instead of knife. many people neglect firearms (i mean firearms that can be purchased and carried legally) avoiding problems with cops after shooting of self defense reasons. but i think if you'll survive defending yourself with a knife, the chances of getting problems with police are same as in the case of defense with firearm. at the same time knife and revolver require the same time for the extraction (from the pocket, holster, etc), but the gun in a woman's hand will produce the higher psychological effect - may be the simple demonstration of it will be sufficient to ward off an attacker. So, there's the chance of eluding the use of weapon. But contrary to the hand gun, knife won't produce such effect, and it reqires the special mental attitude (along with the certain physical skills) from the user (defender) that is crucial and hard to obtain.

Pepper spray or a taser is also good to use, if they are legal where you live.

Important to train with a weapon you acquire and carry.

For instance, lots of people carry pepper spray and don't know wtf they're doing. They should be training off stuff like this:

...not assuming that carrying the stuff will protect them like some sort of magic amulet. It's a tool.

If you stab him, make sure you toss out that pepper spray, because the attackers defense attorney will ask you why you didn't use the pepper spray instead! Shocked

The best weapon is your body, if you can use it well. but in terms of weaponery, i would suggest an expendable baton or even a kubotan. If you know where certain pressure points are located in the human body, a kubotan can be a VERY useful tool for self defense.

hmm, for the lady who first posted, I'd say go for a gun, it's probably the best for her, easy to use, and I think that less psychological 'attitude' is needed to fire a gun than to use a knife. I could tell you guys what the ryu used to do to condition us in the use of the knife, but I'll pass. It's not her weapon, that's obvious. And pepper sprays are good if you can run as well.
If the lady didn't want to use a gun, I'd recommend a LOT of training under a good instructor who SPECIALIZED in self defence, nothing less will begin to change her 'fear-mindset' - the gun would be a last ditch tool if she didn't want to get some training - the training being more to alter her mental and psychological fear of hurting someone. As someone mentioned, the gun might certainly scare him off - if it didn't, she COULD fire. Maybe. Training, training, training. That's what she needs more than anything.

you can learn the correct mindsets from instructors and i recommend that you do, its something we all should learn, i think. in agreement with xplosive, a kubaton is a fantastic weapon if you know how to use it, and an expandable baton is a godsend as you can carry it discreetly, it is a great psychological deterrent and it can (i dont care if its known as "less lethal") beat the hell out of someone, but, you mustn't be nervous because you will be walked over. Good luck!
